INCENCIÁRIO é a segunda exposição no âmbito do CURARTE – Arte e Saúde em Espaço Público. Estão em exposição, no Centro de Saúde da Branca durante o primeiro quadrimestre de 2025, obras de Inês Quente, Paulo Madureira, Carolina Serrano, Zeno Aerts, Martina Barahal, Mira Niittymäki e Max Ekman.
Falarmos sobre os fogos nunca foi tão pertinente no atual contexto ambiental, particularmente o de Portugal. Depois dos incêndios que aconteceram em Setembro de 2024 na grande zona de Albergaria-a-Velha, as imagens do fogo e de tudo o que implicou ficaram, inevitavelmente, impressas na mente de todos nós.
INCENDIÁRIO pode referir-se não apenas à pessoa que inicia um incêndio mas também à própria ideia ‘incendiária’. Compreendermos o poder primordial do fogo pode parecer, inicialmente, difícil, sobretudo quando temos em conta a referida situação ambiental. Incendiário foi o momento da descoberta do controle do fogo pelo ser humano. Deter essa energia permitiu avanços gigantescos da humanidade até hoje: o fogo deu-nos o calor, protegeu-nos dos predadores, cozeu os utensílios de barro que usamos para tudo, deu-nos luz… e tanto mais. É um elemento de uma potência tal que o seu domínio acaba por ser muito plural. Tal como outros elementos naturais, o fogo detêm uma complexidade simbólica que, inclusivamente na sua consideração, transporta-nos imediatamente para uma zona mística, mágica, poética. Até de uma forma mais abstrata, compreendermos esta complexa energia do fogo ajuda-nos a entender que esse mesmo poder pode ser também ser fomentador de ideias inovadoras. É com esse sentido que mencionamos acima o autor Paul Ricoeur, entendendo a obra de arte como um ‘rastilho de fogo’ que pode atinge a humanidade.
Propusemos, por isso, esta temática a vários artistas que já fizeram residências com a Quinta das Relvas e que conheciam o contexto da Branca. Todos eles expressam no seu trabalho preocupações de alguma sensibilidade ambiental que vemos refletidas tanto na utilização de técnicas plásticas sustentáveis, como na própria premissa que dá origem ao trabalho. Nesta exposição pretendemos reunir considerações diferentes deste poder incendiário. A diversidade de pontos de vista apresentados pelos artistas agrega reflexões sobre a possibilidade de vida ou de morte, sobre a poética do quente e do arder, sobre o poder de transformação, encaminhando-nos a pensar em importantes questões como “o que plantar depois da floresta arder?”.
O uso sensato e equilibrado do poder do fogo pode ser este, o da ideia, incendiária, em que cada um dos humanos adquire um poder maior – o da responsabilidade.

INCENDIARY is the second exhibition within CURARTE – Art and Health in Public Space. On display at the Branca Health Centre during the first four months of 2025 are works by Inês Quente, Paulo Madureira, Carolina Serrano, Zeno Aerts, Martina Barahal, Mira Niittymäki, and Max Ekman.
Speaking about fire has never been more relevant in the current environmental context, particularly in Portugal. Following the wildfires that affected the greater Albergaria-a-Velha area in September 2024, the images of the flames—and everything they entailed—have inevitably remained etched in all of our minds.
INCENDIARY refers not only to a person who starts a fire, but also to the very notion of an “incendiary” idea. At first, understanding the primordial power of fire may seem difficult, especially in light of the environmental circumstances mentioned above. Yet the truly incendiary moment was humanity’s discovery of how to control fire. Harnessing this energy enabled immense advances that have shaped human civilization to this day: fire gave us warmth, protected us from predators, fired the clay vessels we use for countless purposes, provided us with light, and so much more. It is an element of such immense power that its mastery has come to encompass many different dimensions. Like other natural elements, fire possesses a rich symbolic complexity that, even in contemplation alone, immediately transports us into a realm of mysticism, magic, and poetry.
Even in a more abstract sense, understanding the complex energy of fire helps us recognize that this same power can also ignite innovative ideas. It is in this spirit that we invoke Paul Ricoeur above, understanding the work of art as a “trail of fire” capable of reaching humanity.
With this in mind, we proposed this theme to several artists who had previously undertaken residencies with Quinta das Relvas and who were familiar with the context of Branca. Each of them expresses, through their work, a sensitivity to environmental concerns, reflected both in their use of sustainable artistic techniques and in the very premises from which their work emerges.
This exhibition seeks to bring together different perspectives on this incendiary power. The diversity of viewpoints presented by the artists invites reflection on the possibilities of life and death, on the poetics of warmth and burning, and on the transformative force of fire. In doing so, it encourages us to consider important questions such as: “What should we plant after the forest has burned?”
Perhaps the wise and balanced use of fire’s power lies precisely here—in the incendiary idea through which every human being acquires a greater power: the power of responsibility.
